Elucidating compositional factors of maize cell walls contributing to stalk strength and lodging resistance

چکیده
Lodging is one of the causes maize (Zea mays L.) production losses worldwide and, at least, resistance to stalk lodging has been positively correlated with strength. In order elucidate putative relationship between cell wall, strength and resistance, twelve inbreds varying in rind penetration were characterized for wall composition structure. Stepwise multiple regression indicates that H lignin subunits confer a greater Besides, predictive model showed high ferulic acid content increases lodging, whereas those diferulates decrease it. These outcomes highlight susceptibility stems may be conditioned by structural features rather than net amount cellulose, hemicelluloses lignin. The results presented here provide biotechnological targets breeding programs aimed improving maize.

The Genetic Architecture of Maize Stalk Strength
Stalk strength is an important trait in maize (Zea mays L.). Strong stalks reduce lodging and maximize harvestable yield. Studies show rind penetrometer resistance (RPR), or the force required to pierce a stalk rind with a spike, is a valid approximation of strength. We measured RPR across 4,692 recombinant inbreds (RILs) comprising the maize nested association mapping (NAM) panel derived from ...

The endospores formed by strains of type A Clostridium perfringens that produce the C. perfringens enterotoxin (CPE) are known to be more resistant to heat and cold than strains that do not produce this toxin. The high heat resistance of these spores allows them to survive the cooking process, leading to a large number of food-poisoning cases each year. The relative importance of factors contri...

Crop production on soils containing sub-optimal levels of nitrogen (N) severely compromises yield potential. The development of plant varieties displaying high N use efficiency (NUE) will optimize N fertilizer use and reduce the environmental damage caused by excess N application. Maize is one of the most important crops cultivated worldwide. Identification of the genotypes with an enhanced NUE...
